Don’t Think of a Blue Elephant

100 Words To:

Focus on What You Want

A friend once challenged me not to think of a blue elephant. After that, I couldn’t NOT think of a blue elephant.

Human beings seem to have a tendency to focus on what they DON’T want.

We invite into our lives whatever we hold in our consciousness. It’s commonly said, “energy flows where attention goes.”

The mind seems to “hear beyond” words that negate things – words such as “no,” “not,” “none,” “never.” Paradoxically, when we focus on what we don’t want, we invite that very thing into our lives.

Just focus on what you want.

Get Yourself a Coach

As a coach, you know firsthand how beneficial coaching can be. But do you have your own coach?

If you’re going to promote coaching to others, doesn’t it make sense for you to have your own coach?

Beyond demonstrating your belief in the value of the service you provide, being coached gives you the opportunity to learn techniques and approaches to include (or avoid!) in your own coaching, as well as the chance to see how another coach markets, sells, contracts, schedules and bills.

As with everything in life, take what works and leave the rest.

Join or Create a Peer Group

An old saying goes, “Show me your friends and I’ll show you your future.”

Your success not only correlates with – it’s determined by – the people you choose to associate with. This is true both of your clients and your colleagues.

Every profession has its own clubs and associations. If you don’t find one you like, start your own. It can be as informal as a book club or a coffee and conversation circle.

The potential benefits are many: swap experiences and lessons, create accountability, find encouragement, sustain motivation. And, ideally, some fun and friendship.
