Knowing Everything
Life’s operative question is “What do you want?”
Years ago, I realized that I want to be omniscient. I want to know everything.
I want to understand myself, why others behave as they do, what the universe is made of (sidenote: did you know we only know what 5% of the universe even IS?), why we exist, how to do a backflip, how to edit my own podcasts, how to love unconditionally, how to make hash browns crispy every time, how to live forever, etc etc etc.
A French saying goes, “To understand all is to forgive all.”
Maybe I want to know everything so that I can fully accept / forgive / love myself and others all the time, effortlessly.
Whenever I feel down that I don’t know everything – and that I’m not learning enough fast enough – I like to recall Carl Sagan’s words,
“For myself, I like a universe that, includes much that is unknown and, at the same time, much that is knowable. A universe in which everything is known would be static and dull, as boring as the heaven of some weak-minded theologians. A universe that is unknowable is no fit place for a thinking being. The ideal universe for us is one very much like the universe we inhabit. And I would guess that this is not really much of a coincidence.”
